LEMS has our MESA team up and running

MESA at LEMS. In this free after school program middle school students will plant, design, construct, and compete and different areas. Some of the competitions for this year are: Invention (using Arduino micro computers), basswood bridge design, hovercraft, and computer game programming. For more information go to MD MESA website here: https://www.jhuapl.edu/mesa/home/default.asp

MESA does not affect the student's grades in any way and this is not for extra help in regular classes. Students will get hands-on engineering experience and working in a team with other students to solve problems.

Students are required to be at ALL meetings. If a student misses more than two meetings they may be removed from the MESA program. The LEMS MESA teams meets most Fridays after school from 2:45 to 4:00. Because this is an extracurricular activity students must maintain at least a 2.00 GPA, with no failing grades. If a student drops below the academic standards then they might not be able to continue in the MESA program. Students must also follow the HCPSS and Lake Elkhorn MS expectations for behavior at all times. At 4:00 students can walk home, or be picked up. If you would like to join the MESA program go to the following links if you have either been in the MESA program or would like to join.

Mission

Advocate for STEM Education, Equity, and Access in Maryland.

Vision

Contribute to a competitive global workforce by increasing the yield and diversity of STEM graduates in Maryland.

Established at APL in 1976 with just two schools in Baltimore City, Maryland MESA today has more than 100 participating schools throughout the state.

As a structured, after school, pre-college program designed to prepare students for academic and professional careers in a STEM field, Maryland MESA seeks to:

Increase the number of engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and related professionals at technical and management levels, and

Encourage and assist minorities and females in achieving success in these fields.

To provide a superior education process that enables Maryland students to achieve their full potential, we:

  • Partner with school systems, colleges and universities, industry and business, government, community organizations, families, and alumni to offer enriching STEM activities and programs for students.

  • Provide services and programs to over 2100 students and 180 teachers from Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Charles, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George Counties.

Since its inception, Maryland MESA has served more than 24,000 Maryland students.
